Being aware on the bike

This is an old song but worth singing again.

Yesterday morning's ride to work started off normal. Once I got on to the expressway, I settled into the left lane hoping it would clear out of lollygaggers when the white pickup to my right decided to join me in lane. I was on Brahma but too close to the loafer ahead of me to speed up out of the way. i rolled the throttle off and slowed enough to avoid the sideswipe. Brahma bellowed and strong roar and the dude driving had a small coronary. His window was down and got a good blast, yet he continued on. He did wave afterwards in an attempt to apologize, I think. A few minutes later he pulled back to the right and I passed him with no issues.

Another few minutes later, a Subaru Forrester joined me as I started passing her to the left. Brahma bellowed once more, and she nearly rolled her car trying to correct.

Even though this happened twice to me on the same ride to work, it is common for many of us and reminds me to always be on the alert. I assume every vehicle out there wants to kill me. Which one will try next?

Be safe folks, I need to keep reading your posts...

Commuting in Houston from 1973 till 2022 on two wheels stories like above were common daily. You always had to be on your toes. The hill country is almost the opposite. Folks seem to realize bikers are an economic savior to the area and aware of bikers. Would be nice in the larger cities had the same mentality.

Agreed. Even though we have all had these encounters we still need to be told. Like the rest of you I constantly have my head on a swivel and assume I am completely invisible.

The other thing that is good to remember is that we can stop a lot faster than other vehicles. If I drop anchor on the highway I can be at a dead stop in under 100 feet. That pretty much guarantees I am getting rear ended if I panicked.

Rolling off the throttle like you did is the perfect reaction. I usually just touch the rear brake to light the light for the guy behind me when I do that.
