Here's my two watch dogs.

Dog Dog supply Dog breed Carnivore Door

Being city pups my resent retirement move to the country has really given them tons of stuff to explore. The deer don't run from the funny little critter any more.

"Hey dad, why do you give those critters a bigger water bowl?"

Sir Winston is a Great Pyrenees who is more likely a Marrema given his build and only 100lbs. Ayva is a Shih Tzu who is more likely a Timber Wolf given her absolutely savage hunting skills when there are critters around.

Ayva is the true garage dog and will sleep under the bike while I work on it.

When we moved from Houston to the country my pups were always exploring new things. So one day I hear one of them parking like crazy looking up.

Now if you noticed that buzzard on top of the pole is probably the size of my dog. Then he starts running over to the other pole.

I can hear the buzzards talking now wondering if that noisy little thing would make a good dinner.

OK. This may be a stretch but I’m bored.

I also have a water puppy. This is Larry. Larry the Lobster. He loves shrimp and clams & is very grumpy almost all the time. In the first pic he had just tapped the glass with his claw to tell me he wasn’t sharing his shrimp and I should mind my own business.

Here are our two girls:

Elie is a Beagle/Basset cross and now four years old.
Mocha is an 11-year-old white miniature Schnauzer. I found her when Pretty Pillion lost her first charcoal colored miniature Schnauzer a little over a year ago. Mocha was being adopted out from a young family with a toddler who was too touchy for Mocha.

My pups don't join me in the garage/shed, but the deer do. Here's one making sure everything is set up for me.

When ever I'm working on the bike they supervise that I'm doing it right.

Now to today's event. My wife is a big animal lover. Yes, I do feed them, but they are wild animals that come visit us.

Even the big boys stop by time to time.

So today I'm outside wrapping the faucets in preparation for the coming freeze, and she wants to know what we, she really means me, are going to do about the deer getting cold. Told her I would throw a little extra corn for them. She says: "What else are you going to do?" I keep walking. "NO, I'm serious" she responded. My suggestion of rooming them in the extra bedroom didn't set well as she eluded that I might need it. Fast forward, I go buy some hay. The deer bed across the street from me in the cedar. I spread the hay down to make a bed for them.

So wife is happy. Yes, we spoil the deer. Looked across the street after I put the hay down (see arrow) and the deer are checking it out. May not be the best picture, but how many deer do you see?

LOL, whitetail deer have been on the planet for 3.5 million years......I'll bet they can survive a few cold days.

Keep in mind that hay isn't a good food for them. As much as you feed them other things they probably won't try to eat much hay, but if they do they will have a hard time digesting it.

It wasn't for food, but a warmer bedding place. Carla would probably but an electric blanket if she could. Then after I took care of the deer she started talking about the birds being cold. I did walk totally away then. I'll be in the spare bedroom or shed tonight probably.

Cold birds.....:D

I get the good intentions part of the bedding, but the deer might not. Just pointing out that if you see them eating the hay you will be doing them a favor by taking it away from them.

Good thing about a really hard freeze is it will kill some bugs that need killing. I have a ash tree (I know, trash ash, but it gives good shade), that had been struggling for several years prior to the 2021 freeze. That cold spell did a little damage to the tree itself, but it wound up coming back healthier than ever. I'm pretty sure there was some kind of insect/parasite in the tree that the cold killed which ended up helping the tree.
